Moon Ritual for Soul Joy

This ritual is offered as a gentle way to work with the Moon at either the New Moon or Full Moon, with a single intention: to be shown what brings your soul joy.

Rather than asking for specific outcomes, this practice invites guidance. It is about opening a dialogue with the lunar energies that govern intuition, emotional truth, and the deeper currents of the subconscious.

Across cultures and spiritual systems, the Moon has long been honoured as a mirror of the inner world — the keeper of cycles, tides, memory, and feeling. In astrology, the Moon is associated with the subconscious mind, instinctual responses, emotional needs, and the nurturing intelligence often described as the Sacred Mother: the energy that sees us clearly and loves us for our unique essence.

To ask the Moon to reveal what brings your soul joy is to ask to be gently guided back toward what nourishes you at a core level.

Preparing for the Ritual

If possible, choose a place in nature where you can see the Moon, a garden, beach, park, or quiet outdoor space. If this isn’t available, a window, balcony, or indoor space with intention will still work.

You will need:

  • A vessel of water

  • Incense, sage, or palo santo

  • A piece of paper and pen

  • (Optional) a crystal that feels supportive or joyful to you. See our astrological crystals sections for inspiration on which crystals connect with the moon, the sign of the moon during the lunation during which you are performing this ritual, or your own Natal Moon sign (see this blog post for discovering your Natal Chart placements).

Water is included in this ritual intentionally. Energetically, water corresponds with the Moon and the emotional body, helping attune your inner state to lunar rhythms and intuitive awareness.

Moon Ritual: Being Shown Soul Joy

1. Clear the Space

Begin by gently clearing your space with incense, sage, or palo santo. As the smoke moves, set the intention that you are releasing distractions and creating a safe, receptive container for guidance.

2. Ground and Connect

Hold your vessel of water. Take a few slow breaths. Imagine the Moon’s light reflecting onto the surface of the water, and then into your own emotional and intuitive body.

3. Write a Letter to the Moon

On your paper, write a letter to the Moon requesting guidance on what will bring your soul joy.

If you are new to this practice, you may find these prompts helpful:

  • Please show me what brings my soul joy in this season of my life.

  • Help me recognise the paths, people, or practices that nourish my true self.

  • Reveal what lights me up, even if it feels unfamiliar or unexpected.

Write honestly and without overthinking. This is not about perfect wording, it is about the energetic state and intention you hold.

4. Hold the Intention

Hold the letter close to your heart. Close your eyes and imagine the feeling of joy you are seeking, not what it looks like, but how it feels in your body. Let yourself sense relief, warmth, curiosity, or expansion.

Thank the Moon for the guidance it will offer, even if you do not yet know how it will arrive.

5. Make an Offering

Pour a small amount of water onto the earth as an offering, to nature, the Moon, and any ancestors or guides that resonate with you. Offer gratitude for their presence and support. Drink the rest of the water, or find a way to use it that feels meaningful (pour into a bath, add some to your cat's water bowl, perhaps keeping a drizzle for a special plant).

6. Close the Ritual

You may:

  • Burn the letter

  • Bury it in the earth

  • Place it on an altar or near meaningful objects (photos, crystals, personal items)

If you wish, place a crystal on the letter and leave it there until the next moon cycle, allowing the intention to continue unfolding.

Receiving the Guidance

Guidance does not always arrive as a single clear message. It may come through:

  • Dreams or symbols

  • Synchronicities

  • Repeated themes in conversation, media, or music

  • Sudden clarity or emotional resonance

For support in recognising and interpreting these messages, you may wish to explore the companion post on connecting with and receiving spiritual guidance, setting the intention to receive insight related specifically to this ritual.

Trust that the act of asking, and creating space to listen, is already part of the answer.
