Astrology is a profoundly complex field, being used for anything from evaluating career paths to dissecting past life karma without even scratching the surface as to its deeply intuitive reflection of the human experience.

For example, did you know that it can be a powerful tool to intersect into self care and healing modalities?

Due to its use of elemental as well as archetypal symbolism, it can act as a great “map” of sorts to help understand both your own body’s energetic signature as well as a tool for intentionally working with current universal energies.

Whether you are an astrology baby or an advanced master, a number of approaches can be incorporated into your self-care and personal growth practice to help you engage the universal energies in an endless amount of creative applications. We have

1) Help support archetypal psychoanalysis and shadow work

If you’ve payed attention to the narrative aspect of astrology, you will have noticed similarities with mythology, religious stories and even modern movie plots. This is because they all use the storytelling mechanism of archetypes, speaking to timeless characters and personal growth conflicts that are relatable because, symbolically, they are universally applicable.

These “archetypal” concepts are used in storytelling because they are considered highly engaging, but the reason for this is they are thought to engage specific parts of the human psyche. This makes archetypal self-reflection a powerful tool for healing, and as such is often seen in modern clinical psychological practices like shadow work.

If you are doing this type of work, it is likely you can find a corresponding astrological figure whose energy can be called into your practice to help understand and transmute what we call “shadow aspects”.

A shadow aspect is the negative expression of a trait, usually experienced when a person hasn’t had the opportunity for healthy expression of a normal human emotion.

You can use astrology to help support a shadow work journalling practice by perhaps applying a relevant meditation oil as a ritual before you start writing. For example, if you are trying to integrate the shadow of selfishness, this is also a shadow aspect of Aries and Sagittarius so the energies of these oils may help you explore and integrate the attribute by invoking the energetic properties through the senses.

Personal self-inquiry being a prominent aspect of what is referred to as “modern astrology”, these types of themes have been written about at length. So, even if you are completely new to astrology, a quick google search along the lines of “which astrological sign struggles with (insert quirk here)” will not only point you in the right direction for which archetype may resonate, but you may also be surprised at the relevance of insight around the issue you are contemplating.

2) Exploring your natal chart for personal self-reflection

If you haven’t yet gotten to explore your natal chart, incorporating the process into your self-care practice can be a hugely introspective and enlightening journey.

As you learn about planetary positions when you entered the world (your body’s own cosmic soul imprint, if you will), you can connect with each planet/sign combination’s energy by “bathing yourself in its frequency”. This is the specific intent behind the Vibe Alchemy range of products, inspired by our ancestor’s own elemental and symbolic attributions to various plants, crystals, sounds and imagery.

If your natal Venus was in Taurus, for example, your internal expression of Venus will carry the signature of Taurus, the constellation Venus’ energy “passed through” as it made its way to you on Earth.

To call in the energy, you could simply use the Taurus Meditation Oil while visualising what this combination may mean you; you could also layer in a Rose Quartz crystal which connects to both Venus and Taurus, compounding the effect.

In theory, these energies are all available at any point in time; what you are doing by “calling them in” is effectively helping your body tune to their frequency so that you can both honour their energy and, through your intent, elevate it to its highest possible expression (this is Alchemy!).

You could make a ritual of it, applying the oil and holding the crystal in meditation before you journal, sit down to read about the meaning of the particular planetary placement, or maybe before doing an activity that embodies the energy that you think it represents.

You can take your time to learn about each individual planet (they will all have made an imprint on your energetic signature), or perhaps intuitively choose to focus on the alignments that jump out at you. If you haven’t already got a copy of your chart, get one here for free, or enquire about our natal chart roadmap services here if you want an extra layer of direction. A natal chart reading with a professional astrologer can also be really helpful if you want to learn more but find yourself overwhelmed.

3) Exploring your natal chart for personal spiritual growth

Once you’ve explored your chart’s influence on personal and current life attributes, deepening your inquiry into understanding your soul’s development journey is a great next step, and can align with energetic self-care/healing as this is an excellent way to access the more abstract spiritual energetic energies contained within your own body (as opposed to the physical/emotional/mental energetic bodies that are easier to contemplate using current-life experiences).

Spiritual development would have been a primary use of astrology at different points in history, meaning the practice contains a number of purpose-built functions for learning about where you came from and where you are headed.

Identifying the relevant aspects and their astrological positions (North Node and South Node soul purpose meanings are a great place to start), you can identify relevant oils and crystals that are likely to trigger the energies within you and connect you to your soul’s own path. Again, a ritual application and meditation with the intent of connecting with your higher self-guidance can be a very powerful experience in itself. But you can also get creative here, using the elemental support tools in rituals like bathing, worship or to enhance any energy healing like Reiki, Sound Healing or even Acupuncture just to name a few.

4) Harmonising difficult planetary aspects for healing personal inner-conflicts

Planetary positions (and how they are impacted by the energy of the signs ) is arguably the most impactful component of your Natal astrology chart. However, zooming out and considering how the individual energies vibe together as a whole can be really helpful when dealing with more complex personality/life conflicts.

A planet like Venus in Taurus can be a beautiful energy to have in your chart (both because Venus is what we called “dignified”, or “at home”, in Taurus, but also because these feminine archetypes literally represent energies of divine feminine love and beauty). However, if you happen to have your moon in Aquarius (which would mean you have what is called a “Square” between your natal Moon and Venus), you may find you experience large and overwhelming conflicts between your thoughts and emotions (which may even lead to repression of emotions or avoidance of certain types of romantic and social relationships for fear of the loss of control that you can otherwise experience with such intensity).

By becoming aware of the major conflicts present in your chart, you then have the opportunity to address these energies and how they affect you. This could be through the mind (identifying limiting beliefs you may have developed as a result of this relationship and addressing unconscious emotional patterns/reactions), but can also be effectively supported through counterbalancing elemental energies. In this case, a custom blend Meditation Oil would likely add the element of Fire to harmonise the conflicting energies of Earth and Air to give you a powerful support tool as you do the mental work of transmuting this particular aspect so that you can experience the positive aspects of these energies rather than the shadow version.

The previous statement may sound wildly presumptuous (how exactly is fire going to affect my emotions, you may ask), but the elemental underpinnings of the body’s various energetic systems is actually fundamental to most energy healing modalities, and has the ability to harmonise energetic imbalances of the subtle planes in powerful ways.

Of course, these remedies are most powerful when the individual’s belief systems allow the elemental forces at play to do their mysterious work without the self-doubt of the analytical mind, so we recommend waiting to approach this only when you are ready enough that this type of approach resonates. Also, because this is a slightly more advanced interpretation of your chart, we suggest you get the support of an astrologer for identifying most impactful aspects and suggestions on which energies would be most beneficial for you to focus on.

5) Transit astrology "yoga"

So far, we have been discussing the astrology of your Natal Chart. To recap, this is how the specific positions of planets at your birth will have influenced your own personality, life, and worked to give clues as to your soul’s development journey.

An equally impactful branch of astrology is what is referred to as “Transit Astrology”, which is where the focus is on interpreting the current planetary alignments (as well as aspects) and their impact on the collective energetic experience. Astrologers who discuss this type of astrology also focus heavily on the cyclical aspect of alignments. This stems from the belief that as planets complete their orbits around the sun and meet again in cycles along their paths, energies seeded during previous cycles may repeat a situation or come to resolution if underlying conflicts have been successfully resolved. You could compare this with an ongoing saga you may have with a distant cousin that escalates as your family meets every year at Thanksgiving dinner.

This is where many astrologers choose to place their focus as it has the greatest impact on the collective. It’s a little bit like following “astrology weather”.

A powerful way to use this aspect of planetary alignment (without getting too lost in the layers of interactions to keep track of) is to think of transit astrology as “making the most” of cosmic energies streaming into the planet at this particular moment in time by ritually honouring them with a ceremony (hence the cute name: transit astrology yoga). Whether you want to take advantage of current beneficial energy, or get ahead of potentially difficult energy, honouring the current planetary alignments by recognising them with spiritual ritual practice can go a long way to transmuting how they are expressed in your life.

You can, of course, pay attention to alignments and aspects that will be triggering your natal astrology. But if you have been focusing on wanting to improve your self-confidence, for example, focusing on Mercury’s current astrological sign (changes roughly monthly) is simple yet highly effective as it can give very powerful energy…sort of like being in direct sun as opposed to the indirect warmth of sitting under the shade of a tree.

See here for our roadmap of 2023/2024 upcoming astrological alignments if you want to have a look at which support tools could be a beneficial investment based on your self-care and healing goals.

The above suggestions really only scratch the surface when it comes to potential ways that astrology can be used to guide the design/intent of energetic self-care and ritual practices. Hopefully one (or more!) of the suggestions have inspired some creativity, and perhaps enticed some of you to delve deeper into the world of astrology.
